That’s great…but what are they used for?
They are used to group messages. They are an easy way to brand words or phrases as important so they can be linked together online. They do not have definitions. They can be categorized in any way. Trending hashtags are tags that are being used by a lot of users. During a Presidential election #vote would be a ‘trending’ hashtag.
@ is another way to narrow a topic directed toward another person. If my user name is ‘chickenlittle’ and someone wanted to remind me to vote it might look like this… “Don’t forget to #vote @chickenlittle” I would then be notified on my social media platform that someone was talking ‘at’ me.
